FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technlogy) was founded by Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers in 1989. Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers felt that it was important to inspire kids interested in engineering and technology. Out of their passion the FIRST Robotics Competition, as well as the FIRST LEGO League, Junior FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Tech Challenge. FIRST operates a research facility in Manchester, New Hampshire where it continues its efforts to give back to the community by holding day camps for student and teachers as well as regular educational programs.
Woodie Flowers described the goal of FIRST with the term "gracious professionalism." The term meaning working with others to complete a general project. At the FIRST Robotics Competition you team up with other students from accross the state at regionals to compete against other teams.
Beginning over 16 years of devotion to the community FIRST held its inagural competition in 1992 in the Manchester Memorial High School gymnasium. Registration for the competition is $6000 dollars for the entry year, and every year after that is $5000. Teams are allowed to add $3500 worth to their kit.
